Annapurna Base Camp: Your first ABC for trekking in Nepal
Annapurna Base Camp : A short overview
Annapurna Base Camp trek is one of the most talked about trekking topics among the international community. It became such a trend in the trekking community, it even got an abbreviation like a code word or something - ABC. If you are intending to travel Nepal and willing to explore mountains, Annapurna Base Camp would indeed become your first ABC while trekking in Nepal.
How to reach ABC
Once you arrive at Tribhuvan International airport in Kathmandu, you need to travel to Pokhara either via flight or road transport. You also have an option to Gautam Buddha International Airport in Lumbini but the flight is only applicable from certain international destinations. In order to address international tourist inconvenience, the Government of Nepal has also built an international airport in Pokhara. Although opened for international flight since 2023, this airport has still been unable to host any international flights yet. In the future, it has potential to host multiple international flights.
Pokhara is still a starting hub no matter where you travel from. In order to accomplish your annapurna region trek, you have to reach here. Reaching Pokhara is quite easier compared to other destinations in Nepal as it is highly accessible from anywhere around Nepal.
We suggest you take a flight to Pokhara as you would have travelled from a long journey to enter Nepal. However, you can even hire a private jeep or travel through tourist buses from Kathmandu as it takes around 6-7 hours by road transport.
Best time to visit ABC
Annapurna Base Camp is popular for the majestic mountain views along with the Rhododendron forests. Normally, Autumn and Spring are the best time of the year to explore mountains through trekking. However, the Spring season from March till May is undoubtedly the best for ABC. This is because of the added natural beauty of the Rhododendron forests as it blooms during this time of the year. Spring is also the year with the highest number of international tourists to visit Annapurna Base Camp.
If your holiday schedule does not match during spring season here in Nepal, your best bet would be during Autumn starting from September till November. This season also provides the best view of the mountain ranges and surrounding landscape. The one thing that might be missing would be the view of rhododendron blooming. However, this season would be best for someone who likes to explore and understand diverse cultures. During this season there are multiple interesting festivals to explore passing through villages and small towns.
Most of the local tour operators and tourism consultants do not recommend winter and monsoon season. During winter, it’s extremely cold on the higher altitudes and the monsoon is affected by potential road blocks and landslides. There is also a higher concern on the effects of climate change especially on the Himalayan region of Nepal which has also resulted in an imbalance in the change of seasons. So, it is always the best approach to consult your travel advisor before visiting Nepal.
Essential items to carry
As far as essential items that we need to carry while trekking Annapurna base camp, you need to realize that our maximum elevation is around 4130 metres above sea level. This is a significant height where oxygen density becomes quite scarce. Due to reduced oxygen level, we sincerely suggest the visitors to acclimatize properly while staying in the higher altitude above 2500 metres.
Some of the items become highly essential no matter whichever season you are travelling. The items can range from good hiking boots (with crampons during winter), multiple warm layers of clothing, a pair of down jacket, thermals, sun protection cream, polarized glasses and hats to cover your forehead especially helpful during mid-afternoon hike.
We also advise our clients to carry cash while travelling in these regions because of the less connectivity of ATMs and mobile devices. The cash would be required only for your personal expenses around the trail or any additional services not covered by your trekking package. We suggest you take your own hot water bottle with you which would be quite handy during the trail.
