Everest Base Camp Trek (Gokyo Route)

Everest Base Camp Trek (Gokyo Route)

One of the most popular and topmost mountain adventures is undoubtedly the Everest Base Camp trek. When added along the serene Gokyo lake trail, this becomes even more spectacular. EBC trek is quite an all-time classic adventure while visiting Nepal but it is also one of the most crowded treks. Not only the base camp but the summit expedition is also crowded too. If you are someone who is really dreaming of Everest Base Camp trek but scared of the crowded path, then the Gokyo Lake route is definitely for you.

Everest Base Camp lies in the eastern part of Nepal. So, if you are travelling from the capital city of Nepal, you have multiple transport mediums to choose. One of the most popular means of transportation is to take a flight to Lukla where your trek would start. There is also another option without taking a flight where you can take a road transport. This approach might take a bit longer to reach Lukla. First you need to travel the whole day by road either to Salleri or Jiri, the last destination through road transport. Then you need to travel a couple of days to reach Lukla on foot. The best approach would be to take a flight to Lukla and start trekking from here which would take us a total of 17-18 days.

If you really want to explore the best trekking experience in Nepal, Autumn and Spring are undoubtedly the best. These seasons also happen to host most of the international and domestic tourists around the region. The spring normally lasts from March till May whereas autumn season in Nepal usually starts from September till November.

We do not recommend you to travel during winter and Monsoon. Winter is the coldest time of the year with temperatures well below freezing, specifically on the higher elevation above 3000 metres above sea level. Monsoon has heavy rainfall which makes the trekking route quite slippery and visibility is also poor while raining. Although the surrounding would have lush greenery but due to heavy rainfall and leeches on the trail, it might not be suitable for your once in a lifetime experience.

So for your memorable travel, both spring and autumn caters to the best trekking experience with lush greenery surroundings. These seasons also favours the trekkers for best visibility.

As far as essential items to carry while trekking Everest base camp, you have to realize that our maximum elevation is around 5364 metres above sea level. This is quite a height where oxygen density becomes significantly low. Due to reduced oxygen level, we sincerely suggest the visitors to acclimatize properly.

No matter which season you are travelling, some of the items are highly essential. A backpack with warm layered clothing, at-least a pair of down jacket, thermals, trekking boots, sun protection like sunscreen cream, polarized sunglasses and Hat - these items become quite essential while trekking in the Himalayas. It is also highly advisable to always carry cash in these regions. We also suggest you to always take your own hot water bottle with you even if you are travelling EBC or any other trek through a local tour operator. You can always refill along the way at various tea-houses while travelling. We also like you to suggest taking crampons along with your boots. Crampons might be highly essential especially during the winter season because of the high residual of snow along the trekking route.

Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp offer one of the most well-accommodated and luxurious stays which can be found in any other base camps around Nepal. The high demand of trekkers seeking premium experiences, good comfort and secure stays have created an incentive for local operators to prioritise well-furnished private rooms, constant hot showers and stable wifi. When we realize these levels of facility, we can come to a conclusion about the estimated cost which might differ according to our service priorities.

Now, let's calculate the price for the flight to Lukla. If you are travelling from Kathmandu to Lukla, it would cost you around USD 255. Whereas travelling from Ramechhap would cost you around USD 186. But Ramechhap is also around 4-5 hours drive from Kathmandu which might also increase the cost of your road transport.

For your stays along the EBC trek, it would cost you around $5 to $10 for lower elevation stays like Lukla and Phakding, whereas 10 USD to 20 USD on your higher altitude stays like Lobuche and Gorakshep. Now, these prices are for local tea-house stays as the price would increase for luxury lodges or resorts with extra amenities provided by those properties.

Regarding food cost, Everest Base Camp typically ranges higher compared to other base camp trekking. The cost ranges from 30 USD to 50 USD per day. It might differ according to the choices of your meal. Normally, local Dal Bhat costs you significantly lower as this is the usual food on every house in Nepal. As a licenced guide is now compulsory (since April 2023), we suggest you arrange a trekking guide before you start trekking. The trekking guide normally charges 25 USD to 35 USD per day whereas a dedicated porter would charge you around 20 - 25 USD per day. You would also need a permit to travel around EBC which would take you an additional amount of 35 USD - 40 USD.
