Ghorepani Poonhill is one of the easiest treks for those who prefer to experience mountain sightings and cultural exploration being very close to nature. At the highest altitude of 3210m in Poonhill, we are able to experience the best panoramic view of Mount Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. This trek also combines the diverse cultural heritage sync between hilly and mountain regions.
How to reach Poonhill via Ghorepani
The trekking trail is located within the premises of Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP) in Annapurna region. The starting city hub is Pokhara. So, if we are travelling from Kathmandu, it would take us around 6-7 hours drive and 25 to 30 minutes by flight. However, in the near future, you might be able to visit Pokhara directly through international flights. Currently, Sichuan and Bhutan Airlines are in the process of organizing regular flights. We might have Pokhara to Australia via Chengdu flights very soon.
Once you have reached Pokhara, you will be staying for the night. The next morning, we would travel to Birenthanti after a 2 hour drive. From here, the actual trek starts where we hike 5 to 6 hours to reach Ulleri. From Ulleri, it takes around 5 hours to reach Ghorepani. Once we reach Ghorepani, Poonhill is just 1 hour hike from here. It is a very gorgeous place to experience sunrise and sunset with spectacular panoramic mountain views.
Best time to visit this short trek
Ghorepani Poonhill is quite a popular destination with rich cultural and natural heritage. It brings the charm of watching the sunrise view with panoramic mountain sightings. Ghorepani Poonhill can be visited all along the year except during the monsoon. It's not that you cannot trek in monsoon - with proper trekking gears you would experience less crowded season of the year. But the trek can be challenging due to slippery and muddy trails, frequent cloud cover and rain which creates poor visibility for mountain sightings.
Unlike other higher altitude destinations which are not suitable during winter season, Ghorepani Poonhill trail is perfectly fine during this season. Even though it might not be the best season to visit, with fewer crowds, magnificent views and snow capped vegetation; it would be a delight to watch different scenery compared to Autumn and Spring. If you prefer better visibility with lush rhododendron blossom, March till May is the best season for you. Essential items to carry
The maximum altitude of 3210m, is not so high as compared to Annapurna Base Camp of 4130m above sea level. However, we must be prepared according to the season we are travelling.
During autumn and spring, a backpack with warm layered clothing, at-least a pair of down jacket, thermals, trekking boots, sun protection like sunscreen cream, polarized sunglasses and Hat - these items become quite essential while trekking in the Himalayas.
if you are travelling in the coldest season of the year, you would experience freezing cold and frequent snowfall. Hence, apart from essential items you would carry during spring and autumn, there are additional items that you need to carry in winter. It is always advisable to take waterproof, windproof and warm clothing outfits with good grip boots. We suggest you to also take crampons along with you while travelling in the winter season.
June till August can be quite challenging because of unpredictable weather with frequent rain, muddy trails and potential travel disruption along the journey to Pokhara including the trekking trail. Because of this type of scenario, we advise you to take spare clothing with a waterproof outfit wherever possible, and a backpack with rain-cover. During peak monsoon around the month of June, insect replicants would also become highly effective as leeches and insects are quite common during this season.
Although Ghorepani Poonhill trail is a short trek with only 3210m above sea level, we still advise you to carry cash with you. Pokhara is the last destination where you would find ATMs. Also please remember to take your own hot water bottle with you. This would be quite valuable while trekking in Poonhill via Ghorepani.
