Is it safe to travel to Nepal after the 2025 Gen Z Protest ?
Introduction: The current scenario that rocked the world
Nepal started its commercial tourism back in 1951 after the collapse of the Rana regime. The same year also coincided with the year when the parliamentary form of democracy was introduced. Since that, Nepal experienced a lot of political modification and changes in government structure. The recent event also became one of the significant revolutions in Nepal’s politics which started from a modest gen Z revolution.
Unification of Nepal
While there may have been earlier efforts to unify the region, written historical evidence identifies King Manadev, who ruled from 464 AD till 505 AD under the influential Licchavi dynasty, as the first recorded unifier of Nepal.
Many centuries later, in the 18th century, King Prithivi Narayan Shah led the reunification of Nepal. The reunification of Nepal’s lost land is the foundation for the modern nation-state. So, Prithivi Narayan Shah was not colonising the foreign land but was reunifying the country's actual geographical domain.
Nepal has evolved dramatically from its spiritual beginnings into a modern nation shaped by centuries of political transformation. Since the reunification of Modern Nepal in the 18th century by King Prithivi Narayan Shah, whose portrait was notably displayed behind the army spokesperson during recent press briefings, the country has walked a complex path of monarchy, democracy, and civil movements. Recently, it faced yet another turning point and yet again, led by its youngest generation.
What happened in the 2025 Gen Z Protests ?
In early September 2025, Nepal witnessed a major youth-led uprising that resulted in the removal of several highly corrupt politicians from government power. The movement was primarily driven by Generation Z with participants ranging only from 13 to 28 age groups. All these youth united in their stand against political corruption, nepotism, and censorship.
The cause of protest was regarding “anti-corruption” which had been addressed by the citizens of Nepal for quite several decades. Although most of the media emphasized the cause to be the ban in social media to gain the clickbait, the story was drastically different. While some of the media, including time magazine, did focus on the real cause of the youth protest which was supported by almost every authentic Nepali people.
According to Time Magazine, “The protests were not just about the social media ban - that was just the tipping point. Underneath was longstanding frustration with corrupt governance structures. For example, one protester said, "We want our country back - we came to stop corruption.”
Current Situation in Nepal (Post-Protest 2025)
Although at one point, the protest had gone out of control because of non-gen z and political parties group interference. Since mid September, Nepal is experiencing regular life and the activities are getting back to normal after the formation of a new government. The former prime minister was forced to resign and an interim government was established after the army filled the few days void.
The current government led by Prime Minister Sushila Karki has a purposeful mission of restoring public trust and preparing for fresh elections, tentatively scheduled for early 2026. However, it looks like a completely new constitution needs to be drafted to address the nation's pain-points.
Tourism and Safety in Nepal after the protest
No ongoing violence or clashes have been reported since 10th September. Curfews and military presence in protest-affected zones have been significantly reduced. After the formation of the interim government, the streets and business activities are back to normal. Since 12th September, the transportation and local tourist activities are also back to normal.
Travel Experiences and Reports

Local tour operators, hospitality businesses, and recent international reports that conditions have improved significantly since the Gen Z protest after travel experiences across Nepal suggest cautious optimism.
One youtube channel got overnight success after showing a genuine protest video as he had arrived in Nepal just one day ago. The tourists trying to explore Nepal suddenly became journalists. “Wehatethecold” host suddenly expressed never before experience but also received hospitality from the protesters which really amazed him about the local people.
