Kalinchowk : A short overview
Have you ever wondered that you wanted to experience authentic Nepal but have very limited time ? If you do then, Kalinchowk would be the perfect trip for you. Just a 5-6 hours drive from Kathmandu valley, lies the destination which favours every type of travellers. Whether you are an adventurer or spiritual seeker, experiencing a nice vacation or mountain sightings, this trip would be very ideal for you.
Located just about 153 kms north-east from Kathmandu (depending upon your starting point), you would be able to experience the best views from the high elevation of 3842 meters above sea level. During the best weather conditions, many of our guests reported spectacular views of the Himalayan mountain ranges like Gaurisankhar, Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Dorje Lakpa, Shishapangma and even Mount Everest (Sagarmatha).
How to reach Kalinchowk
Being part of the Rolwaling trekking region, it lies within the Gaurisankar Conservation Area fed by the rivers like Sunkoshi and Tamakoshi. Our initial destination would be Kuri Village which lies as the base point for numerous travellers exploring nearby areas. Kalinchowk Bagawati, one of the most popular pilgrimage sites, lies on the hilltop of this beautiful village.
To reach Kalinchowk from Kathmandu, you only have a road transport option. If you are hiring a private vehicle, you would easily reach there within a 5-6 hours timeframe depending upon the road traffic. However, for private vehicle hire, we strongly recommend you to take a 4WD as the final section of the road trip can be really challenging for a normal vehicle.
If you are taking a public vehicle either a bus or shared jeep, you might expect delays because of several stops on the way. However, the road trip along the journey to Kalinchowk is quite amazing because of the several breathtaking views with beautiful rhododendron hills and scenic mountains. The public vehicle would only take you till charikot. From Charikot, you have an option to choose either a shared or private jeep to reach Kuri Village which is around one hour drive.
Once you reach Kuri Village, you can take a good rest and restart your adventure on the next day. From Kuri village to reach Kalinchowk Bhagwati Temple, you have two options to choose. If you are hiking uphill, it would take you around one and half hours to walk. But if you feel like exploring through cable cars, it would just take you 6-7 minutes with very beautiful scenic views. After dropping off from the cable car, it is just a 5 minutes walk to the temple.
Best time to visit Kalinchowk
If you are intending to make Kalinchowk as your travel wishlist, it would be favourable all around the year. For experience seekers, it might be more preferable during autumn, winter and spring depending upon your travel motive. For those willing to experience snow which is quite popular among domestic travellers, late november till mid-february might be quite popular. However, trekking and hiking around the region might be quite limited.
But if you are in that category of people who prefer lush greenery and hiking around the region with beautiful views and vibrant atmosphere, autumn and spring would be your best choice. The autumn season normally lies in the month of September till mid-November whereas spring lasts from March till the month of May.
But if you are an off-season traveller or a person who prefers solitude, June till August might be applicable for you. During June, Kalinchowk might be ideal to escape the heat from the capital city or surrounding areas. However, July and August are normally the rainy season. During this weather, you have to be very cautious about the road and flood alert. So, June and August might not be advisable for the journey but you can still view lush greenery and a much cooler environment compared to the lower surrounding regions.
Essential items to carry
As we would be heading towards the highest altitude of 3842 metres above sea level, we must be prepared accordingly. However, it would also depend on the season and specific weather conditions. Some of the items like a backpack with water bottle, snacks, first-aid kit and personal items always come handy regardless of any season or weather condition.
Now, if you are travelling in the coldest season, you would experience freezing cold and frequent snowfall. Hence, it is always advisable to take waterproof, windproof and warm clothing outfits with good grip boots. During autumn, moderate clothing would be ideal but warm hat, gloves and jacket would be great fit for chilly morning and evening.
June till August can be quite challenging because of unpredictable weather with frequent rain, muddy trails and potential travel disruption. Because of this type of scenario, we advise you to take spare clothing with a waterproof outfit wherever possible, and a backpack with rain-cover. During peak monsoon around the month of June, insect replicants would also become highly effective.
